The River Remembers My Name

Back to Journal

In Ada, the Volta speaks in a language older than borders, and every time I return, it calls me by the name my grandmother whispered.

I was born where the river meets the sea. In Ada Foah, the Volta does not end so much as it surrenders, folding itself into salt and sky. As a boy I did not know this was sacred. I only knew the water was cold in the morning and the fishermen sang before the sun woke.

Now I live between two countries. America has taught me many things, but it has not taught me how to be still. For that, I must come home. I must sit on the bank where my ancestors washed their feet, and let the river remind me who I was before the world tried to rename me.

There is a photograph I have not yet taken. It is of an old man mending his net at dusk, the light bleeding orange behind him. Every time I lift the camera, I lower it again. Some things are not meant to be captured. Some things are meant to be witnessed and left alone.

My father used to say the river carries the prayers of the dead down to the ocean, where God collects them like cowries. I did not understand him then. I understand him now. Every wave is a letter. Every tide, a reply.

When I teach young photographers in Ada through Eyes of Hope, I do not begin with the camera. I begin with the water. I tell them: before you photograph a people, you must first hear what their land is saying. The Volta is not a backdrop. She is a witness. She is a mother. She remembers every name that has ever been spoken on her shore, including mine, including yours, including the ones we have forgotten to call.

So I return, again and again. Not to take, but to be taken. Not to document, but to be documented by something older than my lens. The river remembers my name. That is enough. That is everything.
