A morning with the men who pull the Volta open before sunrise.
At 4:47 a.m., the estuary at Ada is a sheet of silver. The men have already been awake an hour, mending nets by lamplight. They sing as they push the boat out — not for me, not for tradition's sake, but because singing is how the sea is asked permission.
